50th Anniversary of Ships State Basketball Championship

Do you remember the 1967-68 Lincoln Ships Boys Basketball run to State?

The Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter published a fantastic package of stories today commemorating this month's 50th anniversary of the Ships' historic 26-0 season and State Championship.

HTR sports reporter @Tom_Dombeck interviewed all 12 players, Coach Ed Fleener, two sports editors who covered that epic season and more. That Ships team had just one returning starter!

Manty Lincoln's March 16, 1968 win at the UW Fieldhouse over favorite Beloit (Coach Fleener's alma mater) stoked pride among not just the team and school but the entire community. Some 5,000 strong packed a welcome-home rally in front of the old Mikadow Theater. Even competitors from neighboring communities like Valders waved signs congratulating the Ships; the nuns of the Franciscan Sisters of Holy Family College "were jumping up and down like cheerleaders," Dombeck wrote.

Read the main story here; a sidebar about the previous summer's important camp in Beaver Dam at Wayland Academy and a where are they now catchup story with the team players and coach, plus video and archived game photos. OR better yet, just go buy today's paper for a keepsake!
