Last night's Oscars are all the buzz today - but did you know Manitowoc Lincoln High has an Emmy Award nominated television producer, production designer and director?
Class of 1972 LHS grad Jerry Wanek was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction for a Miniseries in 2008 for the sci-fi thriller, The Andromeda Strain. The Art Directors Guild nominated Wanek four times for an Excellence in Production Design Award, for The Andromeda Strain, Dark Angel, The Magnificent Seven and Houdini and featured him in the Guild magazine. He also worked on Criminal Minds, Lost in Space, The Librarian and more.
After pursuing a Fine Arts degree at UW Madison, Wanek's first job in L.A. was a production assistant (a "gofer") for Ronald McDonald, he said in this podcast about his career.
Wanek is well known for his set designs on Supernatural, a fan favorite on The CW Network for which he directed three episodes. He told the Herald Times Reporter he puts Manitowoc landmarks in the sets for "fun." Among them are Jack's Beer Garden, Rudy's Lanes, Whitelaw Sausage Co., Wenzel's Perfect World bar and the USS Cobia submarine, a National Historic Landmark at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
"I’m very proud of where I came from, and I think that had a lot to do with where I am today. So whenever I can, I give a little nod to the hometown."
